BAE Systems has brought its team together across the UK to support the NHS and community through the pandemic.

Working with 15 other firms, the global defence, aerospace and security company, based in Farnborough, has been working on the Ventilator UK Challenge following a call from Government to produce more of the life-saving equipment quickly.

The company is helping to develop training materials for those building the newly MHRA-approved Penlon ventilator to enable them to build it to the highest standards in a short time period.

It is also supplying the NHS with thousands of items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), with its industrial-scale 3D printers now producing face shields and supplies being delivered every day, directly to frontline medical staff around the UK.

Its smaller scale 3D printers are also being used to support the PPE effort, producing face shields at a smaller volume as well as innovative ‘door claws’ that help care homes reduce the spread of infection through door handles.

To rapidly increase the supplies arriving on the frontline, it is also sourcing tens of thousands of additional face shields through its suppliers. Richard Hamilton, Manufacturing and Support Director at BAE Systems, said:

We’ve had an amazing response to our recent announcement that we’re donating PPE to the NHS. This has been a real team effort at a difficult time for everyone. Employees across our Air, Maritime and Electronic Systems sectors, as well as our suppliers, are all rallying to play their part in the national endeavour as we work together to ramp up and further increase the supply of vital protective equipment to the frontline.

As a result of everyone’s collective efforts, we’ve been able to respond to requests to send equipment directly to medical staff in our local communities working in GP surgeries, the ambulance service and hospices, as well sending supplies to NHS hospitals and trusts.

Not content with just helping the NHS, the international firm has also helped to produce teaching resources for the STEM subjects as part of its Community Investment programme in the UK. The company partner’s with STEM Learning, the UK’s largest provider of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths education. Together they have developed a range of primary and secondary level teaching resources, perfect for helping those who are currently studying from home get to grips with everything from light and colour to Newton’s First Law of Motion.
